Traffic Jam of Dhaka, Bangladesh

Posted in Bangladesh, Dhaka, Environmental Issue, Traffic Jam of Dhaka by Khaled Saifullah on April 10, 2009

I live in Dhaka, only 20 minutes away from my university; but I get out from my house about 1 hour and 15 minutes before class will start. Because of terrible traffic jam, most of the time it takes about an hour to reach university. I remember a week, right after Eid-ul-Fitr Dhaka city was like half empty, at that week I went to university in 20 minutes.

Dhaka is a mega city. More than twelve million people live here. Day by day the number is increasing and most part of Dhaka is badly affected by the population growth. More than 7 hundred thousand rickshaws ply the city road, but only 75 thousand have legal number. This huge number of rickshaws is creating traffic jam. From time to time attempts are made to reduce the number, but the initiative usually produces no results. The number of rickshaw pullers is huge. Almost there are no roads or street or lane free from traffic jam.

Traffic jam is obstructing trade and commerce. Illegal parking is another reason for traffic jam. Cars, trucks and other vehicles are parked almost everywhere. Faulty traffic signaling systems, inadequate manpower and narrow road spaces and overtaking tendency of drivers create pro-longed traffic congestions and intensify sufferings of commuters keeping people motionless as well as creating suffocating condition in the streets. Also there are bus terminals not authorized by the traffic department and drivers do not go by traffic rules. VIP protocol maintaining is another reason for frequent traffic jams in the streets and divider problem in the city’s different important roads also causes congestion. Besides, illegal car parking, and unplanned road excavating on the same road by Water and Sewer Authority (WASA), Dhaka Electric Supply Authority (DESA), telephone and telegraph agencies without any integration among them, is responsible for intolerable traffic jams. In any roundabout in Dhaka the plying CNG, ricksha, bus, etc form multiple lines.  They do this to grab a tiny space out of sheer desperation.  Behavioral scientists have long since done experiments to show that even insects demonstrate aggressive behavior when they are placed in a crowded situation.  Therefore, it comes as no surprise to see that Dhaka’s pedestrians, thelawallahs, rickshaw pullers, CNG drivers, van pullers, and bus/truck drivers all vie for tiny spaces with noticeable aggression and utter disregard for others’ right of way. This obviously creates serious problems such as unnecessary traffic holdup and minor fender bender incidences.  Nonetheless, there is a price tag for such bizarre behavior. The traffic managers have failed to do anything about this problem and the situation is going from bad to worse day by day.

Most of time, I see that during jam traffic police just let one side go for like 5 minutes or more which increase the jam more. They should manage it more professionally; they could let go each side 1 minute.

To reduce traffic jam we can take steps such as:

  • Have a good public transport system so people would use it
  • Ban rickshaw from the main roads of Dhaka
  • Good traffic system
  • Good lane system
  • Traffic police should do their duty properly
  • Use zebra cross and foot over bridge
  • Respect the law

If we the pplz of Dhaka flow the road rules 20 mins way will take max 30 mins not one and half. Fact is our culture is to avoide the rules.

traffic jam has become a regular feature in dhaka city.illegal occupation of roads by small traders and vendors is one of the causes of traffic jam in the town. No one is aware about it.Bus drivers are mostly responsible for traffic jam. They even dont care about the traffic rules and signals.Everyone should follow the traffic rules.

  5. nazifahmed said, on April 13, 2009 at 3:47 pm

Yea! I agree that most of the traffic jam occurred by rickshaw. But it is also true that now a days the number of buses increases day by day. And the local buses are run very faster. They don’t maintain the rules of the street. They just drive. The bus drivers are uneducated so………. There are some illegal buses which are totally band in the city at day time. They are big buses for highway travels. But now a day those buses also enter in the city in day time and occurring heavy traffic jam. I think our government and the people who really love this country take proper steps to prevent this problem as soon as possible.

Traffic jam is very common scenario in Dhaka city. The main reason is transportation. Because the number of old transportation are still in Dhaka city. They are illegal. They don’t have their fitness. But they are still running in the Dhaka city. so if Govt take strict decision on that then i think our problem will be solved.

when everything is on the rise how do you reduce traffic jam? . . too many vehicles, too many people and no space.
the ideal day to go out without jam being a pain is probably 2nd day of EID!

Traffic Jam…..the biggest problem of our daily life!!!!! we have to spend half of the day in the road if we attempt to travel somewhere!!!

This is a worldwide problem. Fortunately, there is a worldwide movement for free public transport. Free public transport is the only way to rid our world of the private automobile and its problems: congestion, oil wars, global warming.

During Peak hour or Rush hour- this kind of traffic congestion is visible in Dhaka city. Don’t highlight only Dhaka city’s Traffic Jam. There are very few busy cities all over the world where traffic jam is not seen during rush hours. So, I am used to with the traffic jam of of my home city.

  13. Ira said, on September 22, 2009 at 11:29 pm

The main reason of traffic jam is our population. If the capacity of Dhaka is only 1 metric ton….the whole Bangladesh 5 metric ton is there in this very Dhaka….If government really wants to solve this problem then decentralization is a must. If everybody gets the facility being in his/her own city then to travel to Dhaka or living in Dhaka, leaving his/her own city will not be necessary for anyone. As long as all the important chambers, offices and stuffs are in Dhaka the problem of traffic jam will not be solved.

    Traffic jam of Dhaka
Traffic jam of Dhaka can be solving. If government can take initiatives properly in perfect time. Here I will propose to government and those are responsible for making policy.
    Proposals / Suggestions:
    1. Government can shift all wholesale markets, government administrative offices, BDR Headquarter, Dhaka University, Dhaka central jail, all industries, tanneries, to outside of Dhaka city. Industrializations should be based on upozila it should not depend on metropolitan cities. Then rural areas will grow up step by step.
    2. Big business centre can move to Comilla, Feni, Shitakudo, Mirersharai, Chittagong, Khulna Mongla etc or near it because that’s are linked with export or imports. only industrializations can remove Poverty from the country here is no other way to safe our life.
    3. All import-export connected offices should go to near port areas of Chittagong or Mongla, or in on the way to any port where they can send the goods easily for shipment.
    4. All offices should start at 7.30AM and all education institutes should start at 8 AM, Banking should start at 9 AM and all can be end within just 2.30 PM, 4.30 PM and 4 PM.
    5. All main roads should be one way. All type car parking must band in all roads. Stopping of buses in middle of roads should be band except bus stops. All type stands of buses trucks, taxies, cngs etc should band in the roads. Clear all foot paths for pedestrians.
    6. Sky train should implement in Dhaka city like Bangkok Singapore within 3 years. Underground monorail may be not easy to us for more expensive. I think here open sky train may easy to us.
    7. Water transport should be established like other developed countries surrounding Dhaka city.
    8. Highways should be shorter then now.
    9. Population control must be implementing as very strictly like china, if we cannot control over the population the we cannot give the place to our next generation. From now, from today we should not take more than one child.
    10. From now the capital city of Dhaka should be blocked or fixed for limited persons as who can maintain living status of education, rules-regulations, civic sense, morality, regular tax payer and good service contributor etc.
    With best regards

Why we are thinking about curing ………….?………not preventing …?

I think we should do something so that,,,,
Everyday a huge number of people will not come to dhaka city for bread and butter……….

Why not we are thinking about developing our villages………………..

And make 64 modern city ……..not 1 “dhaka city” …………?

I agree with the article above. And i would add, there is no possible solution to this traffic jam problem in Dhaka, unless, the population of dhaka will decrease by half the figure (which is a impossibility) or the millitary will handle it the way it was handled during the last caretaker government (another impossibility for this time). So suffering is the only option. So sad…………….

I agree with the article above too.Traffic can be a nightmare in Dhaka and what normally might take 15-20 minutes is able to easily take over 2 hours during the busy times of the day. Cycle rickshaws, CNGs, taxis, buses, normal cars and other eclectic vehicles all fight their way through the crowded streets often coming to a standstill in busy round-abouts

I am really surprised to watch this scene…I can`t believe how much traffic jam in bangladesh….I am living in Hanovera ..Germany. I have seen here everybody is so caring to run on the streets..They never make any jam..They are very careful about the peoples suffering. But I think so our BD people dont think about the sufferings….Theyare trying to know that they have car and they are rich .Another portion is ricksha puller…Really ds is one of the main reason being to make traffic jam…Administration are so poor..they worried about to take actual action. .and sometimes they take illegal maney from jam maker…so at first we should be caring and have to love Bangladesh. We have to think peoples suffering and try to away from unethical task….

In Bangladesh perspective, we cant expect a jam free Dhaka. Because of
    A. Unplanned city
    B. More number of road crossing.
    C. Increase number of vehicles.
    D. Slow moving transport Specially Rikshaw.
    E. Having no traffic sense of the driver as well as traffic police and gen people.
    F. No parking area for markets or offices.
    G. Allowing construction of Markets, offices and educational institutes beside main road.
    H. Faulty road sign.
    I. High density of population in the capital and tendency of crossing the roads here and there specially while the green signal is on.
    J. Violation of traffic rules where police are helpless in taking action against those vehicles because of many reason.
    K. Lack of training of the traffic police on how to control and maintain traffic rules.
    L. Dishonesty.

All the readers are requested to add more points and also write comments on how to solve those problems.

    Traffic jam in Bangladesh
In my point of view: initially we have to take the initiative which I mentioned bellow.
    Problem:
    1. All poor people easily can come to the main city and live here illegally because they don’t have any job in village that’s why they are thinking if they come to the city then they might have get any job, if they don’t get anything, than they are starting to get involved with different kind of illegal occurrence. Even they don’t care to stay on the street as well. So the traffic jam coming from the people. And we don’t have any restriction and proper plan of this mater also.
    2. Traffic police doesn’t know how to maintain the traffic flow because of they don’t have proper international training. They are maintaining the traffic how they want.
    3. Bangladesh is famous for the beggar people. I haven’t seen anywhere.
    4. All the vehicle is not going proper way. Our mind is like “I have to go at first before the other person. So why should I let them to go at first”.??
    5. We don’t have the particular road bar for particular vehicle. So the jam is coming from that way as well.
    Solve:
    1. Remove all the beggar’s and should have given them work and shelter out side the city.
    2. All the traffic police need internationally training.
    3. Fixed the road bar for the vehicle.
    4. Charge the people when they don’t maintain the rules at least for 3 months, after that they will be getting habitual by themselves.
    5. People have to follow the rules strictly. Have to change their mind for others.
    6. Have to remove all the illigal Rikshaw, and Van which is impossible.

This would be the initial initiative. After that the major problem can be solved by the government plan.
Lastly we have to respect our rules, respect our selves and respect our Country. Than the problem will be removed at least 50% so far I believe.

    Thank you
